Book of Condolence

In Memory Of Georg Schaake

New Zealand member Georg Schaake passed away in September 2009. Along with co-author John Turner, George wrote the series of booklets about Turk's Heads, and the Regular & Mobius Knot Trees.

I am saddened by the report of Georg's death because I did not take the time to get to know him better. His photograph and his work are of enormous interest to all braiders and knot-tyers who aspire to become better. His image shows a gentle soul and his works show a person entirely devoted to his subject. Georg is truly one of those people upon whose shoulders we will all ride. Thank you Georg for having passed this way and shared your incredible knowledge, skill and help with us all.

George Schaake was the originator of real knot theory and generated a substantial body of original findings which - with his collaborator (and amanuensis) John Turner - were summarized in their peerless series of publications on knots and braids. Indeed they produced a mathematical proof (in April 1991) for the Law of the Common Divisor. Georg could be an uncompromising critic of time-honoured beliefs; for, as he wrote to me, "Some Guild members have long toes… which one cannot avoid treading on." Until shortly before his death, Georg's research was ongoing, and I hope that at least some of this work is ultimately disseminated, one way or another.
